As much as last weekend's weather frustrated me, this past week's weather has warmed my soul. After such a cool spring, last week's warm temperatures helped to raise the soil temperature to a much more average place. With warmer soils comes increased decomposition and soil activity, leading to a boost in fertility that was immediately apparent as we watched our plants explode. The potato plants grew several inches, the tomato stalks doubled in diameter, the pepper plants turned a deep forest green, the peas exploded in flowers, and last night I spotted some baby squash in the field.
And then, just as everything had finished drying out and was beginning to look a bit parched, this perfect rain arrived, bringing with it promises of ever more growth. What a beautiful thing this world is!
