So anyway, point being, we are in one of those windows. We need to get about half our acreage seeded with its cover crop – a crop we plant not for cash but instead to improve the soil health. Any fall crops that we want to harvest before the CSA ends need to be planted by the end of the month. We need to plant strawberries for next spring and start getting our garlic beds ready. Oh yeah, and in between that we have about a bijillion pounds of food to harvest. Not to mention the other daily activities. Not an impossible task load, but definitely one to keep us busily occupied for the next week.
The end of these windows is usually dictated by rain. So yesterday we rushed around like madmen, trying to squeeze it all in before the big rain hit, only to be missed. Whenever this happens, I have a weird mixture of emotions. On the one hand, without any rain in the near forecast, we can ease up a bit and get a lot of this done without working ourselves to the bone. On the other hand, we actually could use some rain, especially with this upcoming mini heat wave. Not to mention the fact that my body feels like it aged 20 years yesterday, when I was pushing it to finish tasks that would have been fine to finish today.
So maybe next time one of these windows seems to be ending, we should just take it easy and not worry so much? Ha! I wish I could be ok with that, only I know that next time the rain will come. It always does.
